wow!! today morning's been crazy, had 2 Opu's(egg collections),one for Anine from S.Africa and the other for Vanessa from Brasil.
the procedure went well and both are doing good, time to say good bye's as they will be going back to their country post OPU and as is customary at my clinic we always click pictures for the clinic album.we perform more than a thousand transfers in a year hence it becomes difficult to put a name to a face hence we take pictures.some pics below
Jim and steve from USA with their baby born last month.

I.p's from Spain and S.Africa with Medical Director-Dr.Kiran sekhar and Senior Obstetrician Dr.Pratima Grover.

Myself with vanessa,Anine and Lianey.

an update on the twin Boys born yesterday, both are doing well and started their feeds.no signs of an infection which is good news.this is vital because pre term babies are more susceptible to infections because their immune system is not fully developed.

thursday's got off to a decent start so far.

done a couple of embryo transfers one was a fresh transfer for a very sweet middle aged couple from Angola and the other one was a frozen transfer for a spanish couple.
for those uninitiated this is what a human Egg looks like under microscope, this is retrieved under ultrasound guidance using a very thin and sharp needle(17G) using suction pressure.

as you may imagine it is very different froma hen's egg

the next step is to fertilise the egg using the sperm from the male partner by performing ICSI(intra cytoplasmic sperm injection)
succesful fertilisation results in a dividing embryo which looks like this on day 2 post fertilisation
usually a day 2/3/ or a day 5 transfer is done back into the uterus of the Gestatonal carrier using an embryo transfer catheter which looks like this and consists of two parts an outer sheath which is pre placed into the uterus through the vagina and the cervix and an inner sheath into which the embryo is loaded.

above is a link to a day 3 embryo transfer being performed at my clinic.

after the embryo transfer i assisted in the birth of two lovely twins both boys born by caesarian section at 10.30 am.both are healthy and are doing fine.should be in the nicu for a week before they can go home.so hearty congratulations to Mrs and Mr.SVS from USA and to the gestational carrier.now it is over to case manager Anjani Kumar to process their paper work in order for them to get their passports from the US consulate and exit visa from the FRRO.should take two to three weeks before the boys can go back with thei folks to the USA.

Happy Holi Everyone!!
its been a while since i have blogged, work has been crazy!!creating and transferring embryos is all i have been doing the past few months, however i have decided that i will definetely take some time out for the blog and what better day to start again then the Auspicious Hindu Festival of Holi!
first a little bit about Holi.
The word Holi originated from "Holika", sister of hiranyakashyap who was the king of demons and he had been granted a boon by none other than Lord Brahma which made it almost impossible for him to be killed. The boon was granted to hiranyakashyap due to his long penance, after which he had demanded that he not be killed "during day or night; inside the home or outside, not on earth or in the sky; neither by a man nor an animal; neither by Astra nor by Shastra(weapons)".upon being granted this boon he grew arrogant and attacked the Heavens and the Earth and said that people should stop worshipping Gods and worship him instead!

however his own son Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu and his father Hiranyakaship did not like him offering prayers to Vishnu.Hiranyakahyap decides to kill Prahlad, first he tries to poison him but it turns to Nectar due to the Blessings of Lord Vishnu. He later orders for Prahlad to be trampled by elephants yet he remains unharmed. He was put in a room with hungry, poisonous snakes and survived. All of Hiranyakaship's attempts to kill his son failed. Finally, he ordered young Prahlada to sit on a pyre in the lap of Holika, Hiranyakaship's demoness sister, who also could not die because she had a boon preventing her from being burned by fire. Prahlada readily accepted his father's orders, and prayed to Lord Vishnu to keep him safe. When the fire started, everyone watched in amazement as Holika burnt to death, while Prahlada survived unharmed. The salvation of Prahlada and burning of Holika is celebrated as Holi.

.

in the picture above-hiranyakashyap being killed By Narsimha the Avatar of Lord Vishnu!!

In Mathura where Lord Krishna grew up,Holi is celebrated for 16 days in commemoration of the divine love of Radha for Krishna. The festivities officially usher in spring and commemorates good harvests and fertile land and is also the celebrated season of love, with Millions of Hindus participating .it is a bit like the spanish Tomatina festival, only natural and artificial colours are used.

some friends Enjoying Holi.
