No Stable Partner, The Reason Behind Women Freezing Eggs: Study

Women tend to freeze their eggs not for career planning or education, but due to the lack of a stable relation according to a new study done by the Yale University in USA.
Lack of a stable relationship could be the reason why young women are increasingly opting to freeze their eggs, contrary to the popular belief of delaying childbearing due to pursuing education or career, says the study.

The findings showed that 85 per cent who chose to freeze their eggs, were without partners, and reflected six different life circumstances - being single, divorced or divorcing, broken up from a relationship, working overseas, single mother by choice or circumstance, and career planning.
Those with partners had circumstances such as a man not ready to have children, in a relationship too new or uncertain, with a partner who refuses to have children, or with a partner with his own multiple partners.

"Most of the women had already pursued and completed their educational and career goals but by their late 30s had been unable to find a lasting reproductive relationship with a stable partner. This is why they turned to egg freezing," said Marcia Inhorn from the Yale University in the US. "The medical literature and media coverage of oocyte cryopreservation - egg freezing - usually suggest that elective egg freezing is being used to defer or delay childbearing among women pursuing education and careers. "Our study suggests that the lack of a stable partner is the primary motivation," Inhorn said.

For the study, presented at the 34th Annual Meeting of ESHRE in Barcelona, the team conducted in-depth interviews with 150 women who had chosen to freeze their eggs at fertility clinics and had completed at least one cycle of oocyte cryopreservation.
"Clinicians must be aware of the role partnership 'troubles' play in the lives of egg freezing patients and make patient-centred care for single women a high priority," Inhorn said.

Surrogacy -French Government takes 1 step forward and 2 steps Backwards

PARIS–The French "Protest for All" movement has gathered 100,000 participants in Paris and Bordeaux on 6 October 2014.  Last week, Prime Minister Manuel Valls wanted to reassure, and affirmed to be opposed to gestational surrogacy, a practice of what he calls as “commercializing human beings and merchandising the female bodies”, something intolerable, according to his own words. France also plans a global initiative to get a ruling among the states to this affect.God Only Knows what stone age he is still living in!!

Last weekend, “La Manif pour Tous” or Protests for all has once again shown the sustainability of the movement and its supporters.  Established in November 2012, in reaction to the Taubira law on marriage between persons of the same sex, the movement has grown to a reach that no sociologist or political scientist could have predicted: six large protests, including two that gathered around one million people. With this last rally, the government seems to have understood the message coming from a solid base of the population, defending a “natural” family pattern as the foundation of French society.

This is the card of appeasement PM Manuel Valls played a few days before the rally, admitting he had changed his mind on gestational surrogacy, and recognizing in the public debate the virtue of having evolved government positions. “I think we cannot go towards this kind of procreation that would question our values and principles,” declared the Prime Minister during a press conference in Matignon office.
The gestational surrogacy and the assisted reproduction for people of the same sex, were actually underlying effects of the first piece of legislation on marriage for all sexes in 2012.  What belonged to the natural state of a human being would be legislated by political ideas. That is why, considering the public outcry that started two years ago, and thanks to a deeper debate, the government is now strictly opposed to the legislation of gestational surrogacy.

Important Development for Indian Surrogacy-Court asks Indian Govt. to clarify stand on surrogate children

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday Aked the government to clarify its stand on the citizenship of children born to an Indian surrogate mother in India, but whose biological mother is a foreign national.

“Under the Constitution, a child born here from an Indian surrogate mother is entitled to Indian citizenship, but what happens if the biological mother is a foreign citizen and the child applies for citizenship of that country,” a Bench led by Justice Ranajan Gogoi asked.

The Bench is looking into the larger issue of the need for a “comprehensive legislation” dealing with all the issues and situations, citizenship of a surrogate child, created by the latest reproductive technology.

The problem of citizenship of a surrogate child was highlighted in the case of two twin babies born to an Indian surrogate mother and a German father in 2008. The two boys — Balaz Nikolas and Balaz Leonard, whose father is German national Jan Balaz — were conceived by an Indian woman in Anand district of Gujarat in January 2008.

Today, Justice Gogoi suggested whether the government could even consider dual citizenship for surrogate children born in such circumstances.

“The concept of dual citizenship for surrogate children born in certain circumstances could be considered. This dual citizenship can give limited entitlements to such children,” Justice Gogoi suggested to Mr. Mehta.

The ASG informed that a Bill - Assisted Reproductive Technology Regulation Bill - was introduced in the parliament in 2010, and he would get instruction on the status of the Bill.

The court has listed the case for hearing after 6 weeks to hear the reply from the government.

Surrogacy provisions in the INDIAN ART draft bill.

According to draft bill provisions, no woman less than 21 years of age and over 35 years can act as a surrogate mother

Women in India cannot act as surrogates for more than three successful births, including of their own children, and it would be mandatory for surrogate mothers to have a minimum two-year interval between two deliveries to ensure they remain healthy.

These landmark provisions are part of the proposed draft Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) Bill which the government plans to bring to the Cabinet before introducing in Parliament for passage. 

The bill, a first in India's history, seeks to monitor the unregulated sector of ART clinics, which offer infertility solutions to couples at huge costs, besides preventing commercial surrogacy and safeguarding the rights of surrogate mothers and children born out of surrogacy arrangements.

An estimated 15 per cent couples worldwide are infertile, making ART services critical.

The draft ART Bill seeks to fill these gaps and addresses "ethical, legal issues related to gamete donation, surrogacy and nationality of the child born out of ART in INDIA."

The bill is significant as currently there is no supervisory body in the country under which ART clinics offering services, including surrogacy to infertile couples, can be placed and there is no system to monitor these services and ensure that surrogate mothers are well taken care of.

According to draft bill provisions, no woman less than 21 years of age and over 35 years can act as a surrogate mother.

The bill also, for the first time, states conditions for foreign couples seeking to hire surrogates in India.

Vietnam legalises Surrogacy with a 60% vote

Vietnam is one amongst the several countries which have in the recent past legalised Surrogacy.As i had written last week kenya became one of the countries which legalised surrogacy not just for married couples but also single men and women.
in Vietnam the National Assembly deputies voted on the specific contents on surrogacy. It was approved with 59.1 percent of the vote. The ballot was held because the surrogacy content had been protested by many deputies.
The chair of the National Assembly’s Committee for Social Issues, Ms. Truong Thi Mai,  said that surrogacy is a humanitarian measure to help infertile couples have a chance to become parents. The regulations to ensure the humanitarian purposes of surrogacy and to handle disputes are assigned to the Government.

Surrogacy Bill stalled again in USA!!

Bobby Jindal who is of Indian Descent once again showed his conservative leanings by vetoing the Louisana Surrogacy bill

For the second year in a row, Gov. for the state of Louisana, Bobby Jindal has vetoed legislation that sought to set up a legal framework for surrogacy births in Louisiana.
Jindal announced the veto Saturday, three days before the end of the legislative session. His chief of staff, Kyle Plotkin, delivered the news by phone Saturday morning to state Sen. Gary Smith, who co-sponsored the legislation.
The governor, in his veto message, wrote that “despite the good intentions and hard efforts of the author, this legislation still raises concerns for many in the pro-life community.” He said he couldn’t “in good conscience, sign this bill.”
With his veto, Jindal killed legislation that attempted to give parents legal protection when they turn to a surrogate to carry their biological children. The bill’s sponsors — a state senator and a state representative whose wives grappled with reproduction issues — made a number of concessions without ever garnering the governor’s support.

The surrogacy subject arose during Sunday’s national congress. LLH believe it should be an equal option with other forms of assisted reproduction.
“For many of our members, this is the way they can create a family with their own biological ties,” Bard Nylund, head of LLH said to Vårt Land.
Norwegians currently travel abroad so they can start their own family, as surrogacy is illegal in Norway.
It is estimated that 150 Norwegian children were born by surrogacy in countries such as India or the United States.
Legal rights will only be generally granted to parents under Norwegian law if one of the parents are residents of Norway when a child is born outside the geographic boundaries of the country in these cases.
Another issue is that adoption may be required to obtain legal rights as parents in cases where parenthood cannot be granted under the Norwegian law.
At the same time, homosexuals are losing out when it comes to adopting children.
“There are many countries that will not adopt to same-sex couples, which consequently means this is only a possibility on paper,” Mr Nylund explained.
