Michelle Obama's Journey with Infertility and IVF

Infertility has become quite common among women and this has to be largely blamed on the modern-day stressful lifestyle. However, procedures like IVF make it easier for women to conceive and have biological children of their own.

Even today, with so many well-known fertility specialists and clinics, many are apprehensive to come out in the open and share their problems or seek the right help. One would be surprised to know that significant numbers of women are opting for IVF and these include celebrities and renowned personalities. Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of America shares her story of infertility and miscarriage and it would be interesting to look at what she has to say.

In the book, ‘Becoming’, she reveals she struggled with fertility issues before conceiving her two daughters, Sasha and Malia. In an interview with Robin Roberts for a special on the book, the former first lady said she had a miscarriage 20 years ago.

'I felt lost and alone, and I felt like I failed because I didn't know how common miscarriages were because we don't talk about them,' Obama said. 'We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we’re broken. That's one of the reasons why I think it's important to talk to young mothers about the fact that miscarriages happen.'

She also said she underwent in vitro fertilization in her the mid-30s in order to conceive her two daughters, after realizing 'the biological clock is real because egg production is limited.'

Obama told Roberts she decided to tell her story so women know they are not alone if they're struggling to start a family. 'I think it's the worst thing that we do to each other as women, not share the truth about our bodies and how they work, and how they don’t work,' she said.

When is the best time for pregnancy after miscarriage?

Miscarriage is the most common type of pregnancy loss and often occurs because the fetus isn't developing normally. While the cause of many miscarriages are unknown, chromosomal abnormalities often takes the blame. Miscarriages are not only physically but emotionally traumatic for the patients.

And when to try again is the big question. To avoid infection, intercourse is typically avoided for two weeks after a miscarriage. But you should not try in very first cycle after miscarriage. It is important to get guidance from doctors at Kiran Infertility Centre - Hyderabad for advice once the spouse/woman is emotionally and physically ready for pregnancy after the loss.

There may be no need to wait for more than 3 months after one miscarriage. However in case of recurrent miscarriages, the doctors may advice special tests to identify underlying causes for miscarriage and to lower its chances in next pregnancy. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD testing, can be a helpful for women who have experienced more than one miscarriage. It can also be used to detect single-gene diseases for embryos outside of the womb!

What becomes what in an embryo?

Patients undergoing IVF treatments often gets curious about how these blastocysts develops into their magical babies. What part of blastocyst is what of their babies? Lets find out

According to the embryologists of Kiran Infertility Centre – Hyderabad blastocysts have a ring of cells around them, with a small cluster of cells inside. The trophectoderm, or outer ring, develops into the placenta, which shields and nourishes the developing fetus in the mother’s womb. The inner cell mass (ICM) is the ‘clump' of cells inside, and it is these cells that will develop into a baby.

It really takes lot of love and lot of science in making these precious babies. Those who are ready to start or expand their family but haven't been able to get pregnant can contact us to help you in your journey to parenthood.

A short clip of Assisted hatching for one of our patient.

We aim to make your IVF cycle successful at your very first attempt with us. For this we use different technologies and procedures to optimize the chance of pregnancy. Assisted hatching is one among those.

Assisted hatching is an assisted reproductive technology that can be used in conjunction with conventional IVF Treatment. The theory behind assisted hatching is that it could possibly help with embryo implantation. Doctors at Kiran Infertility Center Hyderabad recommends this procedure when there has been repeated IVF failure or for patients with a poor prognosis.

For successful IVF cycle the transferred embryo has to implant itself into the endometrium and “stick” for pregnancy to occur. And one of the reason for implantation failure is that the embryo doesn’t hatch properly. Assisted hatching is meant to get over whatever hurdles are preventing hatching. It's also hoped that it will improve the odds of implantation success and ultimately lead to a pregnancy.

In this procedure a specialized laser is used to breach the zona pellucida as shown in the video.
