Why irregular periods occur in some women?

Irregular periods are a problem that affects a lot of women at different stages of their lives.

Irregular periods can be indicative of a much more serious health issue. There can be a number of factors responsible for irregular periods. These include:

1) Birth control medicines
2) Stress
3) Lifestyle changes like dieting, smoking, and drinking
4) Severe weight loss and weight gain
5) Eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia
6) Rigorous exercise routines
7) Uterine fibroids or polyps
8) Pelvic inflammatory disease
9) Birth control drugs
10) Premature ovarian insufficiency
11) Endometriosis
12) Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
13) Cervical cancer or uterine cancer
14) Medical circumstances, like an overactive or underactive thyroid gland, bleeding disorders and pituitary disorders that may impact hormonal balance
15) Medications like blood thinners and/or steroids
16) Pregnancy-related complications such as ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage

Some types of irregular menstruation or periods are Amenorrhea, Oligomenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding.

There are certain indications that are linked to irregular periods. These include:

1) Missing 3 or more menses or periods one after the other
2) Periods that tend to last for more than 7 days
3) Menstrual flow significantly lighter or heavier than common
4) Periods that cause cramping, discomfort, vomiting, pain and/or nausea
5) Bleeding and/or spotting that often happens between the periods, right after having sex or menopause
